Cancer Center Receives Approval with Commendation

November 16, 2007

The Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center has been granted a three-year approval, with commendation, from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (AcoS).

The Cancer Center received the approval following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor, during which the facility demonstrated the “commendation” level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program, and received a compliance rating for all other standards.  The Center received commendation for its outcomes analysis, clinical trial accrual, prevention and early detection, cancer registry staff education and cancer-related improvements standards.

The Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center opened in October of 2002 and

houses both medical and radiation oncologists’ offices.   A gynecological oncologist is

also available for consultation. Its Radiation Oncology Department is equipped with the

latest treatment technology, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), the most advanced and accurate radiation treatment available.  Patients and their families can also take advantage of the services of an oncology social worker, a cancer nutritionist, as well as numerous support groups, educational sessions, special events, and a comprehensive patient and family medical resource library.
