Middlesex Named to Top 100 U.S. Hospitals

Others call it an honor.
We call it healthcare the way you prescribe it.

Middlesex Hospital has once again been named one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States in the Thomson Healthcare (formerly Solucient) 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success study. Middlesex Hospital last received the designation in 2005, and this year enjoys the honor of being the only hospital in Connecticut named to this prestigious list.

“This is an extraordinary achievement for Middlesex Hospital that is directly attributable to the talent and dedication of our employees, physicians, and volunteers,” said Hospital President and CEO Robert G. Kiely. He added, “We are extremely proud to receive this honor. It is a clear confirmation of our unrelenting dedication to superior patient care, commitment to community, and constant devotion to improving the services we offer — all with the warmth and personal attention patients have come to expect from Middlesex Hospital.”

The study recognized U.S. hospitals that demonstrate superior clinical, operational, and financial performance. Unlike other studies, this is an objective review of performance data provided to the federal government and other public data sources.

According to Thompson Healthcare, the 100 Top Hospitals have higher survival rates, keep more patients complication-free, and attract more patients — all while maintaining financial stability. The company estimates that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those in the 100 Top Hospitals:

• More than 120,000 additional patients would survive each year
• More than 138,000 patient complications would be avoided annually
• Expenses would decline by an aggregate $6.2 billion a year
• The average patient stay would decrease by more than half a day

The 100 Top Hospitals also reward their employees with better pay and have better patient safety when compared to their peer hospitals.
