Renowned Jazz Singer to Perform at Cancer Center

Renowned jazz singer and songwriter Kitty Kathryn Riley will offer a lunchtime benefit performance on Tuesday, December 18, 2008, from noon until 1 p.m. at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center, 536 Saybrook Road in Middletown.

Kitty Kathryn, as she is better known, has worked with such music greats at Count Basie, Lena Horne, Della Reese and Al Hibbler (one of Duke Ellington’s best male vocalists). Her music career took off after she won as a contestant on the famous “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour,” in New York City.

Kitty established her home in Middletown in the late sixties and has performed for numerous local and regional organizations. She is the co-founder, along with Paul Brown, of Hartford’s popular “Monday Night Jazz Series,” and performs in Hartford’s annual “The Many Women of Color” concert. Kitty also serves on several local committees, including the Middletown Commission on the Arts. 

For her performance at the Cancer Center, Kitty, a cancer survivor herself, will sing a selection of holiday standards with a sing-a-long for those in attendance. The performance is free of charge and open to the public.
