Middlesex Hospital is Connecticut's first and only hospital to earn the coveted Magnet Award® for nursing excellence – for the third time. Only 28 other hospitals in the United States have earned it three times in a row – less than 1% of all the hospitals in the country.
Magnet recognition goes beyond just nursing – it raises the bar for everyone at Middlesex Hospital. It means our interdisciplinary team of professionals has upheld the highest standards for patient safety, customer satisfaction, and state-of-the-art technologies, all of which lead to better outcomes.
How important is Magnet recognition? A 2001 Wall Street Journal article urged readers to "find a 'magnet' hospital in your area" to lessen the impact of the current nursing shortage on one's hospital stay. "Studies show magnet hospitals do make a difference" in the quality of care patients receive, the article said.
And,The Joint Commission, the top health care accrediting organization in the United States, which accredits over 17,000 healthcare organizations, puts it this way:
"Recognizing quality patient care and nursing excellence, the Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care they can expect to receive."
A Top 100 Hospital
In addition to being recognized as a Magnet hospital, Middlesex was once again been named one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States in the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success study. Middlesex is the only hospital in Connecticut named to this prestigious for the past two years.
"This is an extraordinary achievement for Middlesex Hospital that is directly attributable to the talent and dedication of our employees, physicians, and volunteers," said Hospital President and CEO Robert G. Kiely. He added, "We are extremely proud to receive this honor. It is a clear confirmation of our unrelenting dedication to superior patient care, commitment to community, and constant devotion to improving the services we offer — all with the warmth and personal attention patients have come to expect from Middlesex Hospital."
The study recognized U.S. hospitals that demonstrate superior clinical, operational, and financial performance. Unlike other studies, this is an objective review of performance data provided to the federal government and other public data sources.
According to Thomson Reuters, the 100 Top Hospitals have higher survival rates, keep more patients complication-free, and attract more patients — all while maintaining financial stability. The company estimates that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those in the 100 Top Hospitals:
- More than 120,000 additional patients would survive each year
- More than 138,000 patient complications would be avoided annually
- Expenses would decline by an aggregate $6.2 billion a year
- The average patient stay would decrease by more than half a day
The 100 Top Hospitals also reward their employees with better pay and have better patient safety when compared to their peer hospitals. If you would like to become a Magnet nurse and join our team, click here to see positions currently available.
